It does not look like your future green card processing will be affected by any way due to your one year absence, but you might wanna clarify with your attorney about the status of your H1 though. You didn't mention anything on this, but I'm guessing you'll be coming back to the same employer in 2010, just check with them if your one year not being in US payroll would result in revocation of your H1B and they have to apply for a fresh one once you come back.
From the GC front, you don't have anything to worry as far as my knowledge goes.
I am on H1 for the last 3 years. Got my H1 renewed for 3 years last month. Now i have to go back to India for one year (2009) and come back at 2010. I will not be in a payroll for 2009. You can set up a company in India, while you are on an H1B. Are your clients in the US or India ? India & US have a double taxation treaty. If you get paid in India and keep the funds in India, you dont have to pay US taxes on that income. But you will have to pay taxes in India and report in the US.

I am concerned because I am going for my visa stamping in March and the last thing I want is to be out of status! When I mentioned this to my boss his answer was -- We will give you a letter stating that you are working reduced number of hours, and we cannot afford the salary promised on I-129.
Keep in mind that his letter stating reduced hours will be of no good. That actually amounts to fraud on the company's part. Do not get into that doodle.
I think the best thing to do is to get a new LCA approved, and amend your H1. If your new salary is still more than the government published rate for that type of job in your region, a new LCA and amended H1 may not be necessary.
I will search for similar cases and post here if I find something.

Since I did my master's here. I think they filed my case under EB1...I need to re-check. If this is the case then how long does it take. Yes I'm an indian.
I doubt if a Masters qualifies for EB1. But if you filed under EB1, then you should be able to file I485 immediately as that category is CURRENT. Check and confirm the category your employers filed and post your question again.

Well company A can file my GC but the issue is that the financial books of company A are not clear right now. Hence there are chances I-140 will be refused even if I file on EB1.
Company B is willing to take me but the issue is how do I join B. The options which I see are that B files my GC under EB2 or EB3 and I continue to work with company A till then. But then in EB2/EB3 the processing will take years till I get my EAD and join company B.

I had a similar issue for my son (I attached the check and it appeared that they lost the check) and it can be re-submitted again as long as the receipt date stamped on the rejected application is before retrogression which must be the case for you. But you need to wait for the rejected App.
What did the rejection notice say. Did it mention that checks are missing or did it say right amount was not included. My rejection notice said that the check was not made for $1010.00 But my lawyer says that the returned packet did not have the original checks in it and that the text on the notice is just a catch-all reason.

Please dont gets your hopes too high. I am not saying this out of scepticism but out of the depression and pain I experienced on july 2 when the evil uscis said they will reject all 485 applications.
I understand the good natured thought behind IV stating this possibility of "good news", but they should have held off on the announcement until it was confirmed. So many people are unnecessarily getting excited. god forbid if this news fails tommorow I can only imagine the pain the people would experience.
I can only pray and I will pray without getting excited.
